Uhunnwonde: As part of it's oversight function in the water and sanitation sector of Edo State, the Network for Water and Sanitation (NEWSAN) led by the State Coordinator, Dr. Tom Aneni, paid an unscheduled visit to Ugha community, Uhunwonde local government area of Edo State, in order to ascertain the level of maintenance of the stand pipes and borehole facilities put in place by the UNICEF and European Union (EU), in collaboration with the Edo State Ministry of Water and Energy.

The NEWSAN team was conveyed by a member of the Committee setup to look after the maintenance and security of the facilities, Mr. Osaruwense Agbonmabe.
The team visited the Ihama of Ugha, Chief Igbizugbe. Chief Igbizugbe thanked the team for coming and opined that "the water facilities have saved them the cost of going to the river to fetch water."

The team which visited many of the stand pipes, also visited the Healthcare Center where the Matron, Mrs. Doris Eguavoen said "the water taps at the center was flowing well and that more women have started using the center for their antenatal and postnatal purposes."

NEWSAN also visited Ere Primary School where it was discovered that the toilets in the school don't have water; the bole hole was incomplete and the pipes not connected to it. It was also discovered that there was no enough chairs, with most of the pupils sitting on the floor.

Another challenge facing the water distribution is the topography of the community. The project contractor did not consider the community's topography while executing the project.

Speaking, the State Coordinator of NEWSAN, Dr. Tom Aneni thanked the people for ensuring effective maintenance of the facilities and urged them not to relax on their oars.
