Why Nigeria will continue to borrow – Reps

Image
The leadership of the House of Representatives has declared that Nigeria had no choice but to borrow money to fund the 2017 budget. Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had on Thursday last week laid a budget size of N7.298tn before a joint session of the National Assembly for 2017. According to the Green Chamber, the government must spend money to reflate the economy and invest heavily in infrastructure to exit the recession. The Majority Leader of the House, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, gave this stand in Abuja, while speaking on the activities of the legislature in the last 12 months. But, the budget of “economic recovery and growth” came with a deficit of N2.36tn. Its projected revenue of N4.9tn is far less than the expenditure projections. To finance the deficit, Buhari had said that he would borrow N2.32tn. Out of the loan, N1.06tn will be external loan. Another N1.25tn will be sourced within Nigeria. Gbajabiamila explained that Nigeria must borrow because the country was not

2017 Budget: Again, Nigeria fails to meet UN benchmark on education

Image
Nigeria’s education sector has again received much lower than the 26 percent of national budget, as recommended by the United Nations. In the 2017 budget proposals presented Wednesday by President Muhammadu Buhari, N448.01billion was allocated to education, representing about 6 percent of the N7.30 trillion budget, contrary to the recommendation by UNESCO. The global organisation recommended the budgetary benchmark to enable nations adequately cater for rising education demands. Out of the sum earmarked for the sector, N398.01billion was allocated to recurrent expenditure and the balance of N50billion allocated to capital projects. Recent allocations by the federal government to education have shown marginal yearly increases however, except for the N367.73 billion (6.01 percent) in 2016 which saw a decrease from the allocations for the preceding years. The figures include N492.34billion in 2015, N493billion in 2014 and N426.53billion in 2013. The allocations were N400.15billion in
