Suspension of Enogie of Evbuomoma

PRESS RELEASE

The Benin Traditional Council wishes to inform the general public that the Enogie of Evbuomoma village in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area by name Chief Stephen Ohangbon has had a penchant for several years dating back to 2010 for constantly breaching traditional norms and disrespecting emissaries sent by the Oba of Benin to his village on assignment. Several reports have been registered in the Palace against
this Enogie for harassing, manhandling and intimidating the said emissaries to his domain. His uncooperative and hostile attitude towards the Palace of the Oba of Beam all these years was further repeated again recently when he exhibited hostile and intimidating attitude towards palace chiefs that were sent on palace assignment to his domain which he is traditionally assigned to keep watch over for His Royal Majesty, the Oba of Benin. The chiefs namely, Chief Izuwako, Chief Aghamioba, Chief Obadolagbonyi and Ohen Igie reported back to the Palace as follows:

That on arrival, the Enogie who was supposed to receive them was nowhere to be found; after keeping the chiefs waiting for a long while, he suddenly emerged from one corner and told them to hurry up that he is going to work, he brushed them aside. The Chiefs sensing the hostile and life threatening atmosphere by some youths that suddenly came out of the bushes acting like the banned CDA activities members, the Chiefs had to abandon their assignment for safety of their lives.

The Chiefs also reported the presence of some police officers with the youths which seems to be at variance with the
apparently intimidating circumstance surrounding them. The Enogie was then invited to the Palace and all the allegations were put before him. Surprisingly, the Enogie did not deny any of the incidents that the Chiefs reported. Above all, he could not make any
statement to absolve himself. Consequently, the Chiefs made a recommendation to His Royal Majesty, the Oba of Benin for the suspension of the Enogie of Evbuomoma, Chief Stephen Ohangbon and the Odionwere, Mr. Omorogieva Effionayi that is jointly involved in this unacceptable behaviour. After careful consideration of the unrepentant, hostile attitude which was unbecoming of an Enogie, His Royal Majesty approved his suspension as recommended. While he is on suspension, his matter has been handed
over to Private Property Protection Law Committee for further investigation because of the allegation regarding the ban activities of CDA in his domain leveled against him by the chiefs.

However, His Royal Majesty in his magnanimity has left a window open for the Enogie to mend his ways after which he may be re-instated to his traditional position as Enogie of Evbuomoma. The general public is hereby advised that whosoever deals with the suspended Enogie and Odionwere does so at his or her own risk. The Ozukpogieva (No.2) in the village is now in charge until the matter is
resolved.

Oba ghato ‘kpere, Ise.

(Frank Irabor),
Secretary,
Benin Traditional Council.
