Conversion of the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre to trading spot by traders

PALACE NEWS

The Benin Traditional Council has frowned at the conversion of the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre to trading spot by traders.

This negates the original verbal request which government made to His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II for vehicles which hitherto congested Oba Ovonranmwen Square to be loading and offloading at the Cultural Centre pending when State government is able to construct a permanent park for the buses. The State government made this request with good intention to decongest traffic off all the roads that led to the central business district in Benin City. Our Royal Father, His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II promptly acceded to the request considering the urgency and importance.

The Benin Traditional Council decries the insanitary situation of the premises and the wanton damages on the power generating set, pointing out that the arbitrary use of the cultural centre for unconventional and unauthorized purposes is unacceptable. The good intention of the State Government and, the magnanimity of His Royal Majesty to support the government's good plan became unappreciated by the behaviour of the traders and bus drivers that grossly misused the place.

The Benin Traditional Council observed with dismay the act of vandalism on the buildings, which shows sign of being in considerate by the traders and bus drivers, despite the magnanimity of the Palace towards them.

Addressing the traders at Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre, the Iyase of Benin Kingdom, Chief Sam Igbe condermed the conversion of the Cultural Centre into a trading spot. Chief Igbe expressed disappointment over the desecration of the Oba Akenzua Statue by the traders and bus drivers. He said the Palace is however cooperative with government to achieve its aim by allowing the buses to still load and offload passengers, but will not allow any form of trading activities.

The Iyase of Benin advised the traders to look for an alternative space elsewhere for their trading activity, assuring that the palace would liase with government to secure such land for them.

The Benin Traditional Council say henceforth buses would only be allowed to operate at the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre between 6.00 am and 8.00 pm daily only.

It advises vehicle owners not to park their buses in the Cultural Centre after the day's work as anyone who does so, us at his or her own risk

Signed,

Frank Irabor,

Secretary,

Benin Traditional Council
