The Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Magdalene Ohenhen, yesterday flagged off the zonal training workshop on better parenting with a focus on most critical but overlooked factors responsible for the myriad of social issues affecting our children directly and indirectly.

The event was tagged 'Better Parenting' organized by the Coordinating Comprehensive Care for Children (4Children), attracted stakeholders nationwide in the ministry/secretariat of women affairs and social development as well as the civil society spectrum, who lauded the 4Children Project for a well thought out training/workshop.

The honourable commissioner who was ably represented by Mrs. Julie Osigbemhe Olatunji, Permanent Secretary in the ministry added that she was standing on the compliment of the Executive Governor of Edo State 'Mr. Godwin Obaseki' and the good people of Edo State to emphasize this administration's determination to engage every means available to bring to its barest minimum the issues bedeviling the children of Edo State ranging from neglect, abandonment, all forms of abuses and most disturbing is the ugly trend of incest and child defilement.

She further said that the topic "Better Parenting" for discourse today and in the course of this training workshop is one that had hitherto been swept under the carpet while it is responsible for the so many issues confronting our children today. Parents today are lost in the world of work and chasing career with little or no time for their parenting roles, so toys, cable TV, internet and social media, the neighbour next door who we barely know have now taken to these noble roles thereby churning out a bunch of dysfunctional children who end up as a challenge for the larger society due to vices they pick along the way.

"It is on this note I want to commend the organizers for picking Edo to host this training and also to charge all participants to make the most of the opportunity so as to step it down to targeted stakeholders groups to see a change in the present condition of parenting in Edo State and the Nation at large, Olatunji added."

In his words of commendation, the Chief of Party-4Children Project, Dr. Tapfuma Murove, said Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has overtime, participated actively in various activities organized by the project to provide technical assistance to the Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) portfolio.

He added that the presence of the Permanent Secretary at the event showed that her resilience in the fight to bring to it's barest minimum the exasperating issues bedeviling Edo Children and improve the lives of helpless children in the state.

The Chief of Party who was represented by Mr. Christopher Agada added that it has been a pleasure working with the ministry and expressed gratitude for the continuous collaboration as they strive towards improving the lives of vulnerable children, the adolescents in Nigerian.
