As the strange Coronavirus, otherwise known as Covid-19, continues to register its unholy presence in Edo State with the state government raising up its combative tempo to minimize its spread and stamp it out of the state, there is no doubt that the people’s socio-economic lives have been badly unsettled leading to the strategic interventions of philanthropists, key amongst whom has been Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who has been at the frontlines of making adequate protective kits, hand sanitizers and food items available to the less-privileged and the vulnerable that have, no doubts, been strained by the economic exigencies of the time.

Pastor Ize-Iyamu’s quality and large-scale humanitarian intervention, across the eighteen local government areas of Edo State, has received rave reviews amid government’s slow response to alleviating especially the emotional and financial stress of families who are not able to immediately access and afford these basic needs for their households.

This swift, all-encompassing intervention, in terms of preventive toolkits, information dissemination and food distribution has further soared Pastor Ize-Iyamu’s delectable reputation, public-appeal and acceptance, inimitable qualities he had committedly built and sustained over the years.

Speaking penultimate week, after releasing several lorry loads of foodstuffs including Rice, Beans, Garri, Noddles, tin tomatoes, Salt, hand sanitizers, and Coronavirus awareness leaflets to the different wards of the three senatorial districts of the state, Pastor Ize-Iyamu, the leading Edo APC gubernatorial aspirant, equally made public two GSM help-lines, 07046373027 and 08114046290, for distressed persons to call in cases of emergency.

He said that with the partial lockdown and restriction of movement of persons across the state, as part of measures to reduce the spread of the dreaded Coronavirus, people are bound to be hungry and are ready to do whatever they could to get food so they can feed.

In his words, “Let me say clearly that we are doing this not for politics. We are doing it because there is a compelling need at this time to do it. Our target is to reach out to 1000 families. Our plan is that every part of the state, in every ward, we should be able to touch a certain number of families.”

Meanwhile, a cross section of Edo indigenes has applauded the philanthropic move by Pastor Ize-Iyamu insisting that it was the antidote that jerked the State Government, which has now equally begun making plans to share items, out of its limbo to respond to the urgent needs of the people of the state.

An indigene of the state, Elder statesman Friday Ojealaro, in his remarks noted that Pastor Ize-Iyamu deserved commendation, not only for calling on individuals of means to assist provide for the people at this critical period, but also for selling the idea of setting up Food Banks in our rural communities to the state government and spurring Governor Obaseki into the provision of economic palliatives to Edo people.

In his own remarks, James Okeati, an accountant and co-convener, Edo Grassroots Ambassadors, praised the interventions of Pastor Ize-Iyamu in Edo state towards curtailing the spread of COVID-19 and helping the people, especially the poor and vulnerable, to adapt to the perilous times without the pains of hunger and deprivation, maintaining that the gubernatorial frontline runner had stepped in to fill a yawning political leadership gap in the administration of the state.

While faulting the state government’s lack of proactive and organized response to the viral disease and the government’s misguided insistence on playing politics with relief materials, even as a dangerous threat to public health emerged, Okeati insisted that things should be put straight in their right perspectives, setting aside politics.

Said he, “The state government would have done better and should have acted faster. I think the state was not proactive enough in the management of the crisis. We know that we have Edo state indigenes are all over the world and therefore, we were a state at very high risk and should have responded better but quite unfortunately we were all engrossed in politics and focused more on the political crisis which was also mismanaged by the government. Essentially, it seems the government is always reactive and doing damage control, but ideally, the damage shouldn't have even occurred in the first instance.”

His criticism mirrored that of the Nigeria Medical Association, Edo State Chapter, which, amongst other complaints, bemoaned the lack of Personal Protective Equipment such as face masks for doctors, even as the association questioned the non-functionality of the isolation center at Stella Obasanjo Hospital despite the claims of the governor’s to the contrary.

Okeati expressed support for Pastor Osagie Ize Iyamu’s gubernatorial aspiration after assessing his SIMPLE agenda and proposed policy ideas to address the issues holding back the socio-economic growth of Edo state.

He said: “I had already taken a decision to stay on the fence until I stumbled on the SIMPLE agenda by POI. I decided to take a look and I was highly impressed with his plan for Edo state. We had a very deep discussion about his plan for Edo state and the crisis rocking the state. I was quite impressed by his disposition to governance and approach to crisis management. He won my heart and at this point, I don't think I need any consultation to give my support to POI. He really impressed me.”

While joining other 20 groups across the three senatorial districts of Edo State to commend Pastor Ize-Iyamu’s Covid-19 interventionist efforts in the state, The Voice of Edo Central, TVEC, in a statement signed by its chairman, James Ailemen, maintained that the gubernatorial aspirant’s organized response to the crisis was a show of adroit leadership acumen that the state was in dire need of at these challenging times.

Read some paragraphs of the statement by TVEC, “Do you know what it is to feed a family in Nigeria? Then you can imagine what it is to now feed a family in distress. Pastor Ize-Iyamu has risen to the challenge and reached out to the needy in these trying times. We have always known Pastor Ize-Iyamu to have a large heart; but today he has proven he is worth having as a leader. Edo State needs a governor that is proactive to its citizen's welfare, security and health insurance and that is what we call a responsive government. Pastor Ize-Iyamu is the only one that can guarantee a better Edo for us and our coming generation.

“If you are perfect you need no filter or makeup; Pastor Ize-Iyamu has once again risen to the occasion with his sense of empathy and commitment to serve. This is not about politics; Pastor Ize-Iyamu needs no dressing; his intentions are clear. He has showered us with all his attention and we have seen he is not pretending.  Ize-Iyamu is the best.

“Pastor Osagie Ize- Iyamu has demonstrated that Edo state can move forward; his response to the COVID-19 outbreak in the State has simply revealed how a leader should react to emergencies. Ize-Iyamu has shown that, indeed, leadership is a call to serve.”
