Edo group advises Oshiomhole to resist pressure to back Obaseki

Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, APC National Chairman
A socio-political group in Edo state, Safe Edo Movement, has advised the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress and former governor of Edo state, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, to resist what it deemed a blackmail attempt by some persons to pressure him into supporting the second term ambition of his successor, Godwin Obaseki.

The advice was contained in a statement signed by the President of the group, Mr. Chris Oshokha Ethuakhor, detailing damning allegations against the governor and summarizing his tenure as one that “failed to meet the standard of governance delivery expected by the people of Edo state.”

The statement read: “That the governor has taken the path of intimidation of the citizenry through undemocratic indulgences. Crude brutality etched in unbridled violence has been the cornerstone of his government; That several Edo sons and daughters have either been attacked with machetes, guns, axes, and other weapons in this era of the government run by His Excellency, Godwin Obaseki.”

“Those party leaders who align with the governor in his diabolical indulgences in Edo State are either victims of the governor’s game of deception or outright enemies of the APC; Given the number of state leaders and party members who were alienated and have been threatened with violence by Governor Godwin Obaseki, it is apparent that he will never win re-election as governor of Edo State.”

The group claimed that the Obaseki-administration has failed to match the developmental strides of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole who left office in 2016 after an eight-year term widely considered as successful.

“The elevation of Edo State by Adams Oshiomhole as well as Dr. Osaigbevho Ogbemudia are glaring legacies of governance delivery. This includes broadened electricity access to nearly all communities, industrialisation as well as road infrastructures. The Red Roof Revolution of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole remains legendary. The elevation of the health infrastructure of Edo State by the regime of Adams Oshiomhole is expressive in the Specialist Hospital which is physically perceptible.”

“Having experienced the above level of governance delivery, Obaseki’s performance record makes no sense in the assessment index of the people of Edo State.”

Citing multiple instances of attacks on persons in the state shortly after they express a criticism of the governor or declare their disavowal of his second term ambition, the group demanded an explanation from the Edo state government on why none of the targeted attacks has been investigated, even in cases where high-grade weapons such as bombs were used.

It also queried the governor’s appointment of nearly 200 non-essential aides at the time schools in the state lacked teaching staff and suffers inadequate funding.

“The people of Edo State will not continue with a governor who boasts that violent indulgence is what he knows how to do best.”

“We advise Comrade Adams Oshiomhole to be guided. When Obaseki has lost, which you will not be able to help under the present conditions, his promoters will turn it into accusation against you and justification for your removal as National Chairman. We respect you sir. You are a mentor to most of us. Your personality is incidental to the enthronement of the APC in Edo State. Your delivery as governor is highly appreciated by the Edo people. Obaseki’s enthronement came as expression of our appreciation and honour of your person. But we have reached the point of decision, the decision that is also to your better interest. It bothers on changing the present negative narrative that beclouds Edo State. In it all, we have our lives to preserve and the sanctity of our state to defend. This, we will do through our votes come September 19, 2020,” it said conclusively.
