Late Obaseki left a profound legacy in Nigeria Football, says Edo Referees Council

Benin: The Edo State Football Referees Council said late Chief Oyuki Obaseki, the Ohe of Benin Kingdom left an indelible mark in football development in Nigeria. They made this assertion when Executives and Elders of the Council paid a condolence visit to the family of the late football icon.

Speaking, the State Chairman, Mr. Johnbull Nosa Okundolor said Chief Obaseki brought about increase in the indemnity of football referees in Nigeria, hence, reducing corruption in the football community. He said the former league management committee (LMC) Chairman brought a system of informing referees of their match appointments, a week before the match. This according to Mr. Okundolor, was to bring about adequate preparation for matches.



"Late Chief Oyuki Obaseki was a man of integrity and transparency who used his personality to correct some anomalies in the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). He was a man that encourages junior referees to thrive", said Edo referees boss.

While extolling the leadership qualities of the late football administrator, the South/South coordinator of the Nigeria Football Referees Association, SUPOL Osa Omorusi said late Obaseki was very attentive to the pleas of referees, in order to make them happy. "He was the one that made it possible for me to be added to the Referees committeeof the NFF; he was a man that carried everyone along. We dearly missed him", the Premier League Match Commissioner said.

Another Elder of the Council, Chief Captain Stephen Amadin (rtd.), a Premier League Match Commissioner, said late Chief Obaseki came and fought as a gallant soldier in repositioning Nigeria Football, especially when he was Chairman of LMC.

"I was shocked when I heard the news, but thank God he did his best. He took me as one of his family member and today, I'm an household name in football", the retired Captain cum palace Chief said.




Speaking, the eldest son of late Chief Obaseki, Mr. Osayuki Obaseki Jr. said he was delighted to have members of the Edo State Referees Council in his house and prayed that God should sustain and uphold them in all their endeavours. He said the burial date has been fixed for 14th to 30th October, 2019.

"The first two days (14th and 15th) is for football; 16th and 17th are for funeral mass and interment; Friday 18th night is for dinner party/tribute; Saturday 19th is social dance; while Sunday 20th is Thanksgiving service", Mr. Osayuki Obaseki Jr. said.
