Kogi Gov. Bello hands over chairman of Pilgrims Board to DSS

Alhaji Sadiq Mohammed Rabiu, the chairman of the Kogi Pilgrims Board has been suspended by the state governor, Yahaya Bello, and handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for further investigation and possible prosecution, according to the governor’s spokesman, Kingsley Fanwo.

Fanwo said that the punitive action against Rabiu was due to allegations of fraud and dehumanizing treatment of pilgrims from the State to this year’s Hajj.

“It has been established that Pilgrims from the State were kept in substandard hotels in Mecca, prompting many of them to sleep outside the hotel,” Fanwo told journalists on Sunday.

He said Rabiu’s decision to “discreetly include his relations and friends on the pilgrimage while hiding same from government” is against the government’s stance on  accountability, probity and transparency.

Gov. Bello set up an investigative panel which looked into the allegations against the chairman because “adequate provision” was made for the pilgrims by the state government.

“The Governor has directed for the immediate suspension of the Chairman and he has been handed over to operatives of the Directorate of State Security Service for further investigations and possible prosecution if enough grounds are found for that,” Fanwo said.

“Corruption is corruption no matter who is involved or when it was perpetrated. The decision of the Governor to set up a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the finances and administration of the past shows the readiness of government to fight corruption to a standstill in the State.

Attempts at reaching Alhaji Saris Mohammed Rabiu proved abortive.
