Group urge INEC to declare 'true results' of Edo governorship elections

A call has gone to the Independent National Electoral Commission , (INEC), to immediately declare the true results of the Edo state governorship election which it conducted on September 28 2016 because the results it declared "are not a true reflection of what happened on the field".

The call, was made recently at a press conference addressed by members of the Edo for Justice group, a copy of which was given to newsmen in Benin City, the state capital, also asked the commission to acknowledge "an error in judgement ", and apologies to Nigerians of Edo Origin "for conniving with the ruling APC to subvert the will of Edo people".

Leader of the group, Comrade Salami Jasper in the company of Comrade Lorita Aigbokhan, said they frowned at the failure of the Nigerian Police Force in arresting and putting on trial for electoral offenses Mr Philip Shuaibu, the deputy governorship candidate of the APC for facilitating a breakdown of public order and a breach of the peace by threatening an Electoral officer at gunpoint.

"We have visual and documentary evidence to prove that the results declared by INEC were not true reflection of the votes cast by the good people of Edo state".

He added, " the results collated by the various political parties' agents across the polling units in Edo state as well as the results sheets signed by party agents were not the ones declared by INEC on the 29th September 2016, which amounts to democratic abbération".

"7 riverine communities in Ward 10 of Ikpoba okha local government area of the state who never got electoral materials to vote on the Election Day were allocated votes by INEC".

He said, "the INEC Electoral Officer in Etsako West local government was threatened at gunpoint in the company of party thugs by the Edo APC deputy governorship candidate Mr Philip Shuaibu, but were not arrested by the Nigerian Police Force".

Acknowledging that the conduct of voters was generally peaceful and nonviolent, the group condemned the open financial inducement of the electorate by the political parties with a view to corrupting their conscience and buying their votes and said it made the election laughable.

On why the group was making the call when there are indications that the political parties are well on their way to sending their petitions to the Edo state governorship elections tribunal, Marxist Kola Edokpayi, one of the group's leaders said it is never too late.
