Universal Health Coverage: Edo NUJ Partners National Health Insurance Authority


Benin City: In a bid to ensuring affordable healthcare for journalists in Edo State, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council has agreed to collaborate with the National Health Insurance Authority, Edo State. This was revealed recently when members of the National Health Insurance Authority, Edo State paid a courtesy visit to Edo NUJ.

Speaking, the Chairman of Edo NUJ, Comrade Festus Alenkhe said there was need for journalists to be insured because of the risk they encounter in the course of discharging their daily duties. He however called for close monitoring of designated hospital.

"Every designated hospital for the insurance scheme should always do the right thing. We have seen situations where our members are asked to provide money first before they are being catered for. That is a wrong practice.

"Send us a proposal so that we can present it to a fuller house, in order for us to deliberate on the best way forward", Alenkhe said.

Speaking earlier, the Edo State Coordinator of the National Health Insurance Authority, Hon. Barr. Ohonba Uyi Raymond said they were at the Edo NUJ secretariat to seek partnership in the area of awareness and publicity.

"We don't want to be like a man groping in the dark. We ought to be known, hence our coming to the NUJ", Hon. Uyi Raymond said.

Also speaking, the Head of Program, Mr. Ehanire Theodore introduced the Group Individual Family Social Health Insurance Program (GIFSHIP). He said the GIFSHIP has made it possible for everyone to be covered.

"We are after achieving the Universal Health Coverage. Ability to pay is your qualification to be covered", Mr. Ehanire said.
