2019 general elections: NGO hold legislative town hall meeting

Benin: Connected Advocacy for Empowerment and Youth Development Initiative, a registered non governmental organisation with the Nigerian Corporate Affairs Commission, recently held a one day legislative town hall meeting in Benin. The town hall meeting. was meant to create avenue for electorates to engage Edo House of Representatives candidates in the forthcoming 2019 general elections.

Speaking, the Executive Director of Connected Advocacy for Empowerment and Youth Development Initiative, Prince Israel Orekha said the town hall meeting became important as the 2019 elections draw close and election campaigns by political candidates and parties intensify on a daily basis. He said the gathering provided a ground for citizens to discuss important issue-based activities that are propelling the electioneering process.

"In this context and given that general elections are intrinsically and potentially very impactful on the life and trajectory of a nation, it becomes a burden on us to help the people make informed and enlightened deciaion to elect candidates of their choice, especially those with proven competency and accountable representation", he said.

Prince Orekha frawned at the fact that there is no proper framework for constituency projects. He said legislators ought to engage in appropriation, inclusive legislation, oversight function, etc.

"We want to see people who we can hold responsible. That is why this programme is being held. Edo is ripe for citizen inclusion in legislative matters", the Connected Advocacy boss said.

Prince Orekha said the programme afforded the citizens the opportunity to carefully and clearly hear the Edo representatives and would be lawmakers manifestoes and commitment to the people.

"On a personal note and not to disrespect any of the candidates, I am yet to hear any of the National Assembly (NASS) candidates talking about and canvassing positions about their oversight functions and how they might leverage on it to address some of the major challenges faced by the people and country at large", he said.

House of representative candidates that were present include: Pius Alile and Prince Edobor Oghosa of the ADP, Michael Obasuyi of NDCP, Nosa Ephraim Obazelu of the ACD, Osamede Evbakhavbokun of AAC. Also present were House of Assembly candidates.

There was short video documentary on Machina, Yobe State, produced by the Office of the Citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The documentary emphasized the need for engaging political representatives.
