By Olotu Henrietta
Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Rt. Hon. Paul Ohonbamu has commended the Pan-African Online Journalists Association (POJA) for the role they play in the dissemination of information to the public.
Rt. Hon. Paul Ohonbamu made this commendation when he received members of POJA who where in his office on courtesy call.
The Commissioner who pointed out that the social media lacks the creed and ethos unlike the conventional media, said that because the social media is not controlled by the National Broadcasting Corporation, there is distortion that negates genuine information. The Commissioner said Sole Soyinka described social media as promiscuous facilitators bastardizing news because of the manner they go about their job.
He called on POJA to look into this and ensure they balance their reports.
The President of POJA, Mr. Isaac Eranga earlier told the Commissioner that the association is an independent body of professional online journalists, bloggers, social media reporters, online publishers, online digital analysts/ marketers, online editors from different African countries.
Mr. Eranga said the body promotes professionalism and journalism ethics while reporting for the web and is a catalyst for innovation in online news reporting across Africa.
