ERA Threatens Legal Action against SHELL Over Climate Pollution

Environmental Rights Action and Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN),  said they are in support of the plan by Friends of the Earth in Netherlands to institute a legal action against Shell if it does not act on demands to stop its destruction of the climate.

Executive Director of ERA/FoEN, Dr Godwin  Ojo who addressed a press conference in Benin yesterday, said " By the day it is becoming evident that Shell may be running from the mess, but it evades justice. The plan by the Friends of the Earth Netherlands to take Shell to court will further embolden imparted communities in the Niger Delta to institute cases to demand that lives seized and ruined by Shell' activities are taken back

"This case is supported by Friends of the Earth International which campaigns for climate justice for people across the world impacted by dirty energy and climate change. Friends of the Earth International has 75 member group globally, many of them working to stop Shell extracting fossil  fuel in their countries

Quoting Karin Nansen, chairman, Friends of the Earth International, he  said, " this case matters for people every where .Shell is doing enormous damage worldwide - climate and dirty energy have devastating impacts around the world but especially in the global South. With this law suit, we have to hold Shell to account "

Dr Ojo stated that Friends of the Earth Netherlands' case was part of a growing global movement to hold companies to account for their contributions to climate destruction, saying that the case was unique as it was the climate suit demanding that a fossil fuel company acts on climate change rather seeking compensation

"This ground breaking case if successful, would significantly limit shell investment in oil and gas globally by requiring them to comply with global climate targets.

" If we win this case, it will have  major consequences for other fossil companies, and opens the door for further legal action against other climate polluters. Friends of the Earth International wants to see binding rules for corporations like Shell who so often regard themselves as being above the law, including when it comes to climate change."
