NNL: Edo Deputy Gov salutes Insurance, blames loss on poor officiating

Warri - Bendel Insurance football club of Benin players have been commended for their gallantry despite their 3 -2 loss to Warry Wolves in their Nigerian National League match played at the Warri City Stadium yesterday.

Edo state Deputy Governor Rt Hon Philip Shaibu who made the commendation shortly after the tension soaked encounter blamed the away loss on poor officiating, insisting that the central referee Isaac Ogaba caused the unnecessary tension that rocked the game.

According to the deputy Governor, Bendel Insurance Fc played better and deserved to get away with away victory but for the central referee Isaac's alleged inconsistency and bias.

He called on the league management and all concerned football  regulatory and disciplinary bodies to investigate the referee.

"From what I saw, Insurance won the match. If this is the way we want to continue to run football in the country, then we are not ready to grow through the leagues to the national teams.

Football is supposed to be for entertainment and not to be turned into war.

He assured Bendel Insurance players of winning bonus despite the loss.

The Benin based side were maintaining a 2 - 1 lead before half time whistle, with goals from Chinedu Okwutu (27mn) and Agu Chukwunoso (42mns) while Tanko Paul opened scoring for the Wolves. It would have been 2-2 before half time, but Warri Wolves player wasted penalty opportunity as he shot wide following what many spectators described as arguable decision of the central referee.

At the resumption of the second half, the temper of the play continued to change for the worse as the central referee continued to issue caution cards at every touch resulting in several free kicks among which the home team converted one to level scores 2-2. This resulted to a near free for all fight because it did not go down well with the visitors who complained biterly that they were still being addressed by the central referee who was yet to allow the play to continue when the Warri Wolves struck.

The situation was however under control but the game went into extra time far before the home team scored the winning goal at exactly 102 minutes.
