By Adeniran Emmanuel

The Head of Voters Education Department for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Anambra State, Mr. Leo Nkedife in few minutes ago gave an update on the preparation of the Commission towards the November 18th Governorship Election in the State.

Rising from a brief meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Nkwachukwu Orji, the HOD VEP said INEC is ready for the election coming up on November 18th, 2017. It was gathered that the REC just returned from Abuja where he went to attend the meeting of RECs conveyed by the Commission's Leadership.

In an interview with Falcon Times, the HOD VEP said he has just heard from the REC himself few minutes ago and that he gave every assurance that every arrangement to hold a successful election is in top gear. That is the current stand of INEC, he declared. And that the elections are going to be very free, fair and credible.

When his reaction was sought on the threats to ensure the election do not hold as scheduled by the Commission, and the brandishing of guns on some pages of Newspaper yesterday by the IPOB, he said, INEC cannot react to such at the local level. That it is the National Chairman of the Commission that can react on it. Read what he said further, "all I know is that we are going ahead with preparations for the election".

He stressed further, that it is only the INEC Chairman and National Commissioners that can react on this issue of threats from the IPOB, not INEC in Anambra State. He said the key word there is that INEC is forging ahead with every preparations for the election in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, the Electoral Act 2010 as also amended and as well as other Extant Laws. These are the Laws that empowers INEC to conduct elections. So, INEC is working in tandem with the provisions of those Laws, he submitted.

He affirmed that INEC just concluded the CVR Exercise at the Ward level which took place from the 10th - 15th of August, 2017 in all the 326 Wards of Anambra State and this was equally followed by the display of the Preliminary Voters Registers for claims and objections which also took place from the 16th - 20th August 2017.
