The Biblical Fashion

The authentic garments of the bible

Almost all ancient Israelites wore two basic items of clothing: an undergarment and an overgarment. The light bottom layer was a tunic known in Hebrew as a
kutonet (כתנת ). The Bible says that Jacob raised the ire of his sons by making Joseph a kutonet pasim (Gen. 37:3). Four hundred years ago, the King James Version of the Bible translated this as “a coat of many colors,”, but really, it is quite a bad translation of the original Hebrew. The garment is not a coat, but a linen tunic. It is striped, not multicolored.

Moses – A Master of Words
Above the tunic, a heavier outer layer was worn. This cloak or mantle is known in Hebrew as a mitpachat (מטפחת ). This word comes from the verb “to spread out” (טפח ) because often this garment could also be unfolded to serve as a blanket or a sack. In one of the most famous love stories in the Bible, Boaz tells Ruth: “bring the cloak you are wearing and hold it out.” He then fills the open cloak with “six measures of barley, and put it on her back” (Ruth 3:15)
Return to the true roots of scripture

Once you set aside the modern translation you are used to, you will discover the real world of the Bible teeming with authenticity.
