Capacity building workshop on mainstreaming accountability into electoral process held in Benin

By Isaac Eranga

Benin City: As part of engaging political office seekers in the 2019 General Elections on good governance, a workshop on mainstreaming accountability into electoral process in the Niger Delta has been held recently in Benin under the auspices of the Social Action, a nationally registered non governmental organisation in Nigeria.

In an open remark, a Programme Officer of the NGO, Comrade Botti Isaac said the idea was to mobilize active citizens to start engaging political parties' candidates by getting them to commit to certain agendas that will bring about good governance.

"The project is about promoting accountability and commitment. What we do is to go to them and extract commitment from them which are documented to form terms of reference. In other words, it is a process of initiating social contract with them", Comrade Isaac said.

Giving an overview of the project, Comrade Sebastian said the training was meant to promote responsibility amongst participants in bringing about good governance and political accountability and not to apportion blame on anyone.

"The chief thing that brought us here is the issue of political accountability. The issue is holding public holders accountable for their stewardship while in office. In political accountability, the citizens are those with sovereign power", he said.

Also speaking, the Leader of the not-too-young-to-run movement in Edo State, Prince Israel Orekha said the programme was meant to mainstream anti-corruption into 2019 political agenda. He said this is done by engaging the various political candidates.

"It is time for us to engage the candidates. In doining this, one need to develop his/her capacity. This training will help in understanding the issue", Prince Israel said.

The training include fundamentals of public engagement and advocacy, strategies and tools for engaging candidates in an election, setting and shapening the political agenda, extracting commitments from candidates, basic tools and tactics for extracting, tracking and documenting commitments from candidates, etc.
