CSACEFA calls for budgetary allocation for girl child education

The Civil Society Action Coalition on Education For All (CSACEFA) has called on Nigerian government at all levels to consider girl child education when preparing their budgets.

CSACEFA made this call recently in Benin during an advocacy visit to the office of the Permanent Secretary, Edo State Ministry of Education. The Permanent Secretary was represented by Mr Isibor Idahosa.

Speaking, leader of the delegation- Mrs Margaret Ibikwi said CSACEFA was a network of Civil Society Organisations and other line Ministries working on educational issues in Nigeria, with the mission of ensuring free qualitative and inclusive education for all.

"Our visit here is to request for a copy of the Edo State Educational Sector Plan (ESP) in order for it to be reviewed while taking into consideration the issue of  gender sensitivity. The benefit of the ESP is that it brings about donor funding, and more awareness on gender based education.

"To educate a girl child means to train her mind, character and abilities. Education is fundamental human right that should be availed to every girl child irrespective of the age and nationality.

"The importance of education in the life of a girl child can never be over-emphasised. In both spiritual and temporal mundane aspects of human existence, education is paramount. It is the light that shows the way by removing the darkness of ignorance; salt that gives the taste of life; the medicine that cures and the key which open doors. The greatest favour a girl child can get is “to get education” and “to give others education," she said.

Responding, the representative of Edo State Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary, Mr Idahosa, said the ESP is with the State Governor- Mr Godwin Obaseki. Mr Idahosa said at the point of defending the plan, some clauses were removed and were sent to the Greenfield Contractor who is currently working for the state Governor. "The ministry is open  to CSACEFA and we are ever ready to work with you to improve the education of the girl child", he said.

The organizations represented at the advocacy visit include: Girls power Initiative (GPI), Lift Above Poverty Organization (LAPO), Indomitable Youth organization (IYO), Project charrilove organization, Society to Heighten Awareness of Women and Children Abuse (SOTHAWACA), and African Women Empowerment Guild (AWEG).
