Availability of clean and affordable water in Edo State: NEWSAN partners Edo government

Benin City: In a bid to curbing the incessant increase in the rate of typhoid fever in Edo State, the state government has assured the residents, of clean and affordable water. 

This was revealed by the Managing Director of Edo State Urban Water Corporation- Mrs. Rose Adegboyega, when representatives of Network for Water and Sanitation (NEWSAN), Edo State chapter paid her a courtesy visit Thursday November 25, 2021. She said the State government was ready to partner with NEWSAN in achieving clean and portable water for the populace. 

"The governor has approved operational funds for the upgrade of facilities. We have been able to put our pumping station at Upper Sokponba on. 

"There is increase rate of typhoid fever because people are building borehole s close to sucker-way. Our own is to sunk  industrial boreholes which could serve as source of drinking water, while individual boreholes may be used for toilet and other domestic purposes.

"We are going to commercialize the provision of water. Most of our water facilities are moribund because the amount charged are not enough to maintain the facilities.

"Though we talk about commercialization, we are still going to be social. The people will be made to conveniently access water at affordable rates", I he Water Corporation MD said.

Speaking earlier, the State Coordinator- Dr. Tom Aneni, said they were in the Corporation to familiarize with the MD and also to decipher the best way to tackle water challenges in the state through partnership. He commended Mrs. Rose Adegboyega for progress so far achieved in the water sector of Edo State. 

Also speaking, the Treasurer of NEWSAN- Comrade Chris Ogholoh, said NEWSAN works towards improving the life expectancy of Nigerians. He said water was one of them because water can easily be infected. He said NEWSAN had successfully carried out various monitoring projects.
