EPIA partners Edo State Govt over Health Insurance coverage

By Isaac Eranga

Benin City: The Edo Progressive Indigenous Association (EPIA), also known as Edo Indigenous Movement (EIM) Worldwide, has entered into partnership with the Edo State Government in bringing free health insurance coverage for over 20,000 less privileged Edo indigenes.

This was disclosed on Thursday February 25, 2021, when members and Executives of the Pan-Edo cultural pleasure group paid a courtesy visit to the Director General of the Edo State Health Insurance Commission - Dr. Rock Amegor in his office in Benin City.

Speaking, the President and Founder of EPIA - Chief Dr Bishop Omogiade Edokpolo thanked Gov. Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki and the Management team of Edo State Health Insurance Commission led by Dr. Rock Amegor for the great job they are doing in achieving the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Edo State.

"EPIA will encourage the Commission in its drive to prioritizing Edo Indigenous people by giving them 20,000 out of the 25,000 free slots offer by Edo State Government. We will assist the Commission in getting Edo indigenes registered.

"We will also enjoined the Commission to prioritize Edo Indigenous people in everything they do. EPIA is ready to support the Edo State Health Insurance Commission to achieve it's goal of Universal Health Coverage", said Chief Dr Edokpolo.

Speaking earlier, the Director General of Edo Health Insurance Commission, Dr Rock Amegor welcomed the group and said it is pertinent that group like EPIA worked with the Commission because they know and are closer to the grassroots, whether they are resident in Nigeria or Abroad.

"I seek this partnership in order to sell this idea to Edo indigenous people in an attempt to fill the knowledge gap, especially when we consider the fact that it's a novel idea in Nigeria. In most advanced countries, health insurance started 100 years ago.

"Two weeks ago, we started registering people- starting with the civil servants. After registration, it will take 60 days to start enjoying the health insurance scheme.

"In this health insurance year, we are registering 25,000 Edo people for free. Our target at the end of 2021 is 40,000. We start with three local government areas; at the end of the first quarter of this year, we shall capture the remaining local government of the State", Dr. Amegor said.

EPIA was founded in 2014 and was registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in May 2014. EPIA aim is to put the interest of Edo people first, unite the Esans, Binis, and Afemais in one accord and also to empower Edo indigenous people across the board, with the help of EPIA coordinator s in different countries in the around the world.
