The moribund state of the integrated enterprises at the University of Benin: the task before the new Vice Chancellor - Prof. Lilian Imuetinyan Salami

University of Benin (UNIBEN) is a research university located in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. It is among the universities owned by the Federal government of Nigeria and was founded on 23rd November 1970. It has two campuses(Ugbowo and Ekenwan).

The University of Benin is a big community of its own, with an estimated population of Seventy five thousand(75,000) Students, close to eight thousand(8000) staff strength(Academic and non academic) and over five thousand(5000) people who renders various services within and outside the University environment.

Comrade Amieye Omorogie
The integrated enterprises at the University of Benin was created to render various services to the ever growing population within and outside the University community and equally serve as research centres. Services like the Uniben Bakery, Uniben water, Uniben press, Uniben Farm etc were created to meet the yearnings and aspirations of the School.

Over the years poor management and handling of this enterprises have left it in a shadow of itself.  Imagine the amount of internally generated revenues(IGR) this would have brought if well handled. The university goes as far as Lagos to print question papers, answer sheets, brochures, files and other documents while it has a printing press. This is an Institution that teaches business management but can't live by example.

Successive administration appoints various heads of the respective establishment not on the basis of merit but on what I call "Come chop basis." The Vice Chancellor would appoint a professor who probably for one reason or the other he can't have full control over to head an establishment and the result is cabbage. That one is a professor does not guarantee quality control and smooth business running.

The eculium task before the new Vice Chancellor (Prof. Lillian Imuetinyan Salami) is to restructure all the enterprises within the University environment by getting a round peg in a round hole with a view of increasing the institution's internally generated revenue. This are my suggestions:

1.  Get seasoned administrators within the University environment to head the various establishments. It can be a senior lecturer or senior non academic staff who can be checked without fear or favour.

2. These enterprises can be outsourced to private individuals with a yearly target.

3. Call for public input on how to move the respective establishment forward from time to time. You will be astonished with the level of ideas that would emanate from such forums.

Let me close here with the last verse of the Uniben Anthem, while wishing the new Vice Chancellor an innovative and performing stay in office.

God bless this our noble school as we bid peace to reign. May we have no cause to mourn but rejoice in gains achieved.
