Benin City: The Chairman of Edo State Football Referees Council (EFRC), Mr. Johnbull Nosa Okundolor, has lauded the performance of Edo FIFA badged Referee, Celestine Efosa Igudia in the World Cup qualifying match between Angola and Gambia, which ended 1-0, in favour of Angola. Mr. Okundolor said this in Benin City, while answering questions from journalists in Benin City. The Chairman said the superlative performance of FIFA Igudia in the 2019 All African Games, made the football governing body to appoint him for the World Cup qualifying match.

"The Edo Referees Council is proud of FIFA Efosa Igudia, he has really made us proud through the laurels he brought to the State. There was technical accuracy in the matches he officiated in the All African Games in Morocco. I think this made the football governing body to appoint him for the World Cup qualifying match between Gambia and Angola, which was played in Gambia.

"As the State refereeing training officer, FIFA Efosa has put in a lot effort in making Edo referees good umpires of the laws of football. The training programs of the referees have also been intensified, which has translated in the production of successes in the Referees' National Fitness Test, known as the Cooper Test. Edo Premier League Referees are among the best in the country.

"As I promised when I was recently inaugurated as Chairman of Edo Football Referees Council, more FIFA Referees will emerge from Edo State before the expiration of my tenure. With what is happening in the training department under FIFA Efosa, it is gradually becoming a reality", said Edo referees boss.

Also speaking, a Match Commissioner with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and the PRO of Edo Football Referees Council, Dr. Isaac Eranga, described FIFA Efosa as a round peg in round hole. He said the feat so far achieved by FIFA Igudia has proved that there are good referees in Edo State.

"The only thing we want Efosa to do for us is to mentor junior referees that will later take over from him. I think coming up with more training programs will help achieve this. I pray God uphold him in his refereeing endeavours", Dr. Eranga said.

FIFA Celestine Efosa Igudia had told newsmen after his arrival from the Gambia that he would do his best to reproduce himself before retiring as a FIFA referee. He said Edo State has young aspiring referees that needed to be worked on.

We need the prayers of Edo people", the FIFA Ambassador said.
