The Countdown to the 2019 Civil Society Accountability Forum that has held annually since 2016 started after the close of the two days meeting of civil society stakeholders held at Heartland Alliance Nigeria Boardroom, on the 2nd and 3rd of  May 2019. The meeting is scheduled to hold in Abuja in November 2019. The specific dates will be announced later.

The meeting which brought together leaderships from the 15 Civil Society Networks working on HIV and AIDS in Nigeria reached a consensus that this year’s conference shall focus on accountability and domestic resourcing of the HIV response post NAIIS.

The first day of the meeting was dedicated to listening and learning about the status of the national HIV response from critical stakeholders. This included discussions about the national plans on differentiated service delivery in Nigeria presented by Dr Chukwuaodinaka Nwakaego working with the Federal Ministry of Health, the Global Fund current and future plans for Nigeria discussed by the Global Fund Nigeria Office Executive Secretary, and the UNAIDS discussions about its Nigeria plan discussed by Dr Richard Amenyah and Mr Gabriel Udelikwo.

The three days Civil Society Accountability Forum shall start with pre-conferences for women, youths, key populations and persons living with disabilities respectively. The Civil Society shall spend the next two days to engage with stakeholders involved with the Nigeria HIV response with the view of engaging them in discussions on how resources available to them have been used effectively for the HIV response in Nigeria, what gaps there are and how the Civil Society can help to do more.

The Peer Review Forum, the organisers of the conference, is a civil society watchdog for the national response in Nigeria specifically focused on pushing for accountability and effective use of allocated resources to achieve set goals and target by stakeholders to achieve goals set for the national HIV response.

Post the 2018 CSO Accountability Forum the Peer Review forum has pursued four definite agenda namely; treatment optimization and elimination of user fees for people living with HIV, reduced age of consent for HIV services for adolescents, development of a national HIV PrEP roadmap for Nigeria, and increased domestic resourcing of the HIV response.
