EU, IOM trained new set of Libya returnees on business skills
The European Union (EU) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have trained fresh set of Libya returnees on business skills and cooperatives in Benin City.
The Project Manager, Abrham Tamrat IOM told reporters that the project is under the EU-IOM initiative for migrant protection and reintegration in Nigeria.
Represented by a Senior Project Officer, IOM Benin Sub Office, Mr Aigbeze Uhimwen explained that the project was in series, noting that "the training will equip the returnees with the knowledge for their start up Business.
"After this training, we'll now commence their reintegration proper thereafter they'll be empowered to start a small and medium scale business. Some will start as collective group while others will start as individuals," the project manager stated.
He said the beneficiaries include nursing mothers, pregnant women and other returnees who were assisted by IOM to return to the country.
While advising the returned migrants to keep hope alive, Abrham Tamrat said "They should take whatever they've learnt seriously-this training they have gotten they can use it not only for themselves but also for their families and communities.
A trainer and Executive Director of Society for the Empowerment of Young Persons, (SEYP) Jennifer Ero described the project as a 'holistic approach', saying "the four days entrepreneurship training will avail the trainees who are mainly youths to know the nitty-gritty of business and its sustainability."
Another trainer, Wande Pearse is optimistic that the trainees will explore the business skills imparted in them in their future endeavours.
"They are Nigerian youths who were misled and have come to realization they need to settle and focus here in Nigeria.
Some of the returned migrants including Christian Egwedo and Osaretin Steven both were assisted to return to Nigeria May, 2017 commended the EU-IOM initiative.
Osaretin Steven particularly said she has become a better person now, saying she will henceforth impact her community.
It was gathered that over 6,000 returned migrants from Nigeria have received additional reintegration support, including help for individuals to set up a small business with groups of returnees or in partnership with their community.
