Niger Delta Elders Ask Buhari to Reverse NNPC Appointments

Leaders of the Niger Delta region led by a former minister of information, Chief Edwin Clark have appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to reverse his recent appointments and promotions in the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and its subsidiaries, arguing that they were lopsided.

Addressing newsmen yesterday, in Abuja, Chief Clark said, "The cabal surrounding Mr President should allow him do the right thing. He was elected as President of Nigeria and not President of a particular section of the country."

He claimed that the whole of south had only 19 positions out of the 55 positions in the NNPC, while the north, a non-oil producing region has 36 including very senior offices.

Chief Clark explained that the elders in the region under the umbrella of Pan-Niger Delta Elders' Forum (PANDEF) had initiated a peace process that led to the growth and stability of the nation's economy and would not want their children to return to the creeks.

"We are pleading with the president to revisit these appointments and make adjustments. I will not keep quiet; I am above 90 years. Our children should not be made second class citizens in their own country. We can't continue with this kind of impunity."
