UNFPA To Train Extension Health Workers

UNFPA To Train Extension Health Workers

LAGOS - The UN Population Fund (UNFPA), said it was planning to commence training of community extension health workers across the six geo-political zones of the country on how to administer injections.

The UNFPA Head of Lagos Liaison Office, Dr Omolaso Omosehin, made the disclosure in an interview with newsmen in Lagos.

He said that the extension workers would also be trained on how to administer contraceptives and other injections.

“The UNFPA knows that there is currently a dearth of trained medical personnel in Nigeria.

“Research has shown that the duties of these medical personnel can be carried out by community health extension workers.

“The UNFPA is, therefore, going to train community health extension workers across the country on how to administer not just contraceptive injections, but injections for other ailments.’’

Omosehin expressed optimism that the training would increase the number of health workers needed in different parts of the country.

The official said UNFPA was also working with the Federal Ministry of Health in developing policies and guidelines aimed at improving reproductive health services in communities.

He added that the organisation was working with schools of midwifery in producing graduates equipped for efficient reproductive health services.
