Four staff sacked at Federal Neuro-Psychiatric hospital, Benin City

Management of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric hospital in Benin City yesterday said it sacked four of its staff with recourse to due processes and adherence to Public Service Regulations.

It said the four affected staff had committed several offences in the past that would have led to their sack but were pardoned.

Chairman of the hospital management board, Dr. Abieyuwa Osemwenkha, who spoke at a press briefing yesterday said the management acted based on recommendations by a committee set-up by the Federal Ministry of Health.

Dr. Abieyuwa gave the names of the sacked workers to include Mr. O.J Ugiagbe-Ogbeide, Theophilus Osifo, Dr. Ambrose Lawani and Pharmacist Kennedy Oriakhi.

Abieyuwa stated that the affected staff have been at loggerhead with the hospital management over the appointment of the Medical Director, Dr. Sunday Olotu, in 2012.

She said the affected workers were charged to court for falsification, threat to life and attempting to steal official document of another worker.

Abieyuwa explained that two others, Dr. Charles Ikeji and Mrs. O.U Morgan who were charged along the four sacked staff, were placed on suspension.

She further stated that the four workers were axed because they stormed the hospital premises last Wednesday with thugs and locked up the gate.

According to her, "All of them have lost a patient case note before. They have received query before. To loose a psychiatric case note can be used against this hospital. They have been granted amnesty for offences that would have led to their sack."

"Their activities are too numerous to mention. A committee was set-up from the Federal Ministry of Health. The committee gave recommendations and we agreed with the committee on it's recommendations. There must discipline and it must start from somewhere

"Two high powered delegation came to apologise to these people. The main crust of the matter is the appointment of the MD. I made them to understand that the appointment of MD is political. They went to court and their plea was thrown out because the court said they don't have locus standi."
