Looting of Covid-19 palliatives in some Nigerian States: EPIA condemns diversion by government, others

Edo Progressive Indigenous Association (EPIA), also known as Edo Indigenous Movement (EIM) has blamed Edo State and Nigeria government for the breaking into warehouses by angry youths, where Covid-19 palliatives that were meant for the vulnerable and the poor were kept   months after they were being released by the Federal government of Nigeria.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Edo indigenous leader and President of EPIA, Chief Dr. Bishop Omogiade Enoyiegiere J. Edokpolo. EPIA lamented the spate of destruction of lives and property which are the results of the looting meted on the warehouses.

"The palliatives were supposed to be distributed to the poor and vulnerable so as to cushion the effect of the covid-19 on them but why were they in the warehouses. This is disheartening and highly lamentable. No wonder we didn't see anybody that boasted he or she went home with a palliative when the heat of the covid-19 was high.

"The government should stop playing politics with the lives of the people they are governing. EPIA will not allow that to continue; we will always ensure that the rule of law takes its rightful place in the affairs of the people.

"Though we blamed the governments of the affected States for hoarding the palliatives, we also condenm the action of the looters who went to break into the warehouses to cart away various consumables meant for the people. Some private warehouses we're also affected in the process. For instance, in Benin City, a private warehouse was looted at Textile Mill Road in the suburb of Benin. Also, a popular business woman in Benin was not spared the sledge hammer of the looters as her own trucks were used to cart away her property and crates of drinks. This is the bad part of it

"As we use this medium to call on Nigerian government to be responsive to the plight of the people, we are also call on the Edo people to desist from the act of looting as two wrongs cannot make a right. Edo indigenous people are known to be peace loving", EPIA said.

It should be recalled that warehouses believed to belong to some State   governments, including Edo, have been broken into by angry youths and property including consumables carted away. The States presently affected include Lagos, Osun, Cross-river, Edo, etc.
