Misplacement of societal values: root cause of improper waste management in Nigeria

Edo state governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, yesterday said the misplacement of core societal values, are the bane of improper waste management in Nigeria.

The governor made the assertion at a stakeholder forum held in Benin City, the State Capital, organized by the Junior Chambers International (JCI) ahead of their upcoming program, tagged  World Clean Up Day to sensitized the citizens and to brainstorm on ideas, and to forge the way forward and to decipher the role of government and private sector towards achieving a circular economy in a clean healthy safe environment in Nigeria.

The governor who spoke through his SSA on environment, Dr. Felix Iyalomhe, maintained that in the olden days waste of any kind were being managed more on consciousness of the core values of the society rather than the scientific and other methods being practice today.

According to him, the government is working on policies and programs with all stakeholders and organized private sector in tackling waste management and ensuring a healthy  environment for everyone in the state.

Stakeholders at the event which include, a renowned media practitioner and former  JCI President of Nigeria  Mr Tony Abolo advocate the need for government in all levels to spend more fund and  partner academia and researchers in new ideas on waste management.

The president of JCI Benin metropolitan Amb. Efe Bevy Kporharor, called on government, NGOs and everyone in the society to join them on World Clean Up Day to achieve the essence of that day
World clean up day is an annual clean up day by the Junior Chambers International JCI bid to hold September 13th, 2018 across the world.
