Amaechi hosts Obaseki, as SOAN assembles distinguished stakeholders to dissect industry challenges

All roads will tomorrow lead to the Lagos Civic Centre as the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi hosts the Executive Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki to a Workshop and Dinner bash, in furtherance of Government’s new policy towards exploring new grounds for enhancing the nation’s transport industry.

The Ship Owners Association of Nigeria (SOAN) at whose instance the workshop is being held, had sought the attention of the Minister, positing that the need for bringing distinguished, and highly revered personalities together, to collectively brainstorm, chaperoned by Amaechi, so as to evolve genuine solutions, for the pains of the industry.

One of their concerns, for instance was that stakeholders should not continue to fold their hands and watch the neighbouring ports boom with business activities, while situation in Nigeria, remain abysmally low.

The SOAN Arrowhead, Engr. Greg Ogbeifun specifically pointed out that they were working for a more enduring and more encompassing solution, hence, their insistence for the presence of distinguished speakers like the former Director General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Barrister Mfom Usoro who would examine the position of Government policies; particularly those things that needed to be put in place so as to beat the challenges of unstable policies. She would also critically appraise the bottleneck against flying the Nigerian flags by vessels.

Other Speakers are the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Emefiele who would present the lead paper; and the Bank of Industry Executive Director, in charge of Large Enterprises, Simon Aranonu.

“The draconian charges are discouraging things”, Engr. Ogbeifun stated, noting also the inadequacy of any tangible protection from institutional platforms like NIMASA, NAPIMS and the Nigerian  (local) Content Board has continued to ensure the dominance of foreign shipping operators, even in purely local / Cabotage operations.

It is generally believed that by the end of the workshop, holding at the Lagos Civic Centre, the nation would not only be better informed, the Minister would also have been able to fully induct the stakeholders on the exactitude of what Government desires of the business class.
