Promoting Social Accountability in Education: Stakeholders Hold An Interactive Session In Benin

Benin city: In a bid to promoting social accountability in Edo public schools, key stakeholders recently converged in Benin city to brainstorm on the way forward. The interactive session which was put together by the Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All (CSACEFA) had as its theme- Promoting Social Accountability in Education: Building Stakeholders Synergy Project. 

The stakeholders frawned at the absence of Edo state Ministry of Education, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), who were supposed to be part of the interactive session, despite the volume of letters written to them.

Speaking, the Edo State Coordinator of CSACEFA, Ronke Ojeikere said the meeting was meant to promote social accountability within the education sector, encouraging stakeholders in decision making process, and promoting collaborative and constructive dialogue especially with line ministry.

Delivery a presentation on the Principles of Social Accountability, Mrs Blessing Eromon of CLEEN Foundation, defined social accountability as an approach towards building accountability that is reliable and relying on civic responsibility. "Everybody is involved.

"Social accountability is actually citizen led. We must hold the public officers accountable for the services they promised", she said

She gave the following as principles of social accountability: involvement, participation of citizens, and time bound.

According to Eromon, the pillars of social accountability include: professionalism, ethical, law, and employability.
