Benin City: Life Boat Initiative for Societal Development (LBI), a nongovernmental organization registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, has emphasized the role of the judiciary in the sustenance of peace before, during and after elections.

Speaking with newsmen after an evaluation  of the 2023 Presidential and National Assemblies Election, the Executive Director of LBI- Mr Osarobo Ogbevoen,  said the judiciary is the final arbiter of the electorates in any electoral process. He said the way the judiciary manages the process determines if there will be peace in the polity. He called on aggrieved political parties and their candidates in the just concluded presidential and national assemblies elections to seek legal redress in registering their grievances.

"I want to use this medium to commend leaders of the various political parties and their candidates for embracing peace, and encouraging their faithfuls not to take to violence after the declaration of the presidential election results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). They acted in that peaceful manner because they see the judiciary as unbiased umpire that will rightly interpret reality of the electoral process.

"To make the work easier for the judiciary, the federal government should uphold and embrace peace and the rule of law throughout the process, that is, pre, during, and post elections and implement the 35% affirmative action in the electoral system for women and also enshrine 20% for persons living with disabilities. Such will allow for inclusive approach to the democratic system", Mr Osarobo Ogbevoen said.

The LBI also called on all well-meaning Nigerians to embrace peace at all times, saying there is no where violence has done any nation good. He asked citizens, contestants and their supporters to control their emotions and use peaceful means to drive home their grievances without resorting to killings, maiming or destruction of properties. These acts can take a nation or state 20 times backward.

Life Boat Initiative for Societal Development was established to amplify the voices of the less privileged and for advocating safe space for all to actualize their potentials.
