Inaccessibility to basic hygiene: NEWSAN to engage political actors and candidates

News Blogger: Isaac Eranga

Findings show that 48 million people practice open defecation (OD) and that only 17% of Nigeria's population have access to basic - hygiene services, while 23% practice open defecation, access to basic water supply services is 67% of which 13% are safely managed services. Funding in the Water and Sanitation sector is insufficient with the current investment gap estimated at 1.9 trillion naira ($5.3 billion) according to National WASH Action plan.

As a result of the aforementioned, the Network for Water and Sanitation (NEWSAN) in collaboration with other stakeholders have developed WASH Charter of Demand which is geared towards engaging political parties and incoming political office holders on commitment to prioritize support for WASH financing when elected. This charter according to NEWSAN focuses on financing, transparency, equality, human right to WASH, inclusiveness and climate change.

According to the charter which was made available to Social Reporters News Service by Edo State Coordinator of NEWSAN Dr. Tom Aneni, "funding in the sector is insufficient with total investment needed to meet SDG 6.1 and SDG 6.2 targets by 2030 being a minimum of 3 times increment of current WASH investment.

"The national government has made effort to improve the WASH sector the establishment of Open Defecation Free (ODF) Road map, PEWASH, Emergency Declaration on WASH, Executive Order 009 against Open Defecation (OD), WASHIMS, and National WASH Action Plan.

"But more needs to be done if we as a country must make progress towards achieving SDG 6.1 and 6.2 targets. The key issues that need to be addressed include, low political will at sub national level, lack of commitment, insufficient budgetary allocation, releases and weak WASH coordination.

"Evidence has shown that lack of WASH commitment by political parties and intending office holders during electioneering campaigns contributes greatly to these issues and with Nigeria's2023 national election less than two-month from now, it presents a unique opportunity for the citizens to get political commitment from political parties and their candidates to ensure that they realize the imperative of WASH", said NEWSAN.
