Cervical cancer eradication in Oyo: NUUCCE launches cancer screening

----Every 2 minutes a woman dies of cervical cancer

Ibadan: In a bid to eradicating cervical cancer in Oyo State, Nigeria, University of New Mexico, University of Baltimore, Project Echo and Center for Bioethics and Research (NUUCCE), has launched a training in cancer screening for 100 health workers in Oyo State.

The training is aimed at building  capacity in the Oyo State health care system to screen and prevent cervical cancer by implementing cutting edge, evidence based theoretical and practical training. In the course of the training, partipants will be trained via a blend of didactic presentations and hands on sessions for a period of 12 months.

Speaking, a Professor of Epidemiology, University of Maryland, Baltimore- Clement Adebamowo said the training lays a foundation for the elimination of cervical cancer in Oyo State. He said there will be trainings on some point of recent technology introduced. 

Of n his part, the Oyo State Director of Public Health- Dr. Olubunmi Ayinde said state-of-the-art technologies have been procured by the State government in a bid to making Oyo State a pacesetter in the eradication of cervical cancer.

Also speaking, a Consultant Gynaecologist - Dr. Imran Morhasson-Bello said in very two minutes a woman dies of cervical cancer. According to him, "600,000 women are diagnosed of cervical cancer yearly and that every two minutes, a woman dies of cervical cancer". Morhasson-Bello said according to estimate, if nothing is done, more than 1 million new cases will occur.
