"UNUANE" PHILOSOPHY: EXAMINING THE OTHER SIDE OF A MANUAL CAR

By Prof Matthew A. Izibili

Hello my cherished friends,  thank God it's Friday. I wish to humbly draw our attention to the natural difficulty in serving the human mouth call in Esan as Unu. Primarily,  if I ask what is the use of this part of the body called mouth,  I guess you will be quick to say,  it is used for talking. Another may say for eating.  Yet another will say for other things  - drinking,  smoking,  to bless or curse,  repair or destroy, etc -.

Meanwhile, whichever of the selected usage of the mouth that made the list above & many more that you may know, I'm interested in reflecting on the power of the words from the human mouth. Following the physiological make up of the human being,  the mouth is little below the nose. It makes no serious difference if one has thick lips or not. But it makes a lot of sense to me if the arrangement of the set of teeth is proportional to the size of the lips for coverage. This should be taken seriously.

It is usually said that once the hands has finished a task,  the mouth is the one that will make the announcement of how well done or not,  the task or responsibility, is. Inside the mouth, you find what the Holy Book described as smallest part but very powerful (positive or negative). This part is the tongue, the enabler of sound production especially words. Dearly beloved,  a whole lot of things have been said this period & even much more will be heard.  Unuijaga, Unuitokpa, & Unuane on my mind this season.

Today,  we have a lot of drivers using our roads even if there's lockdown or not. The road worthiness of the cars may not be an issue here for me.  But,  do you know that most of the cars are what I will call driving made easy?  This is my description of an automatic car. All you need to do is to simply put on the ignition,  press the jar selector to Drive,  then, your hands on the steering,  fire down, off you gooooo!

The manual car is not driven that way. I am not trying to open up a driving school here but there's something I wish to bring to our remembrance.  If you have driven or you still drive the kind of car I refer to as manual car here,  you remember that you need to press down the clutch properly,  select the jar,  before you begin to release your leg from the clutch gradually...  Failure to do it properly,  will make the car to jerk & go off.  The reason for this is because, the clutch was not properly engaged before attempt was made to move the car.  The clutch plate may even be damaged/burnt.

Unu (mouth) & it's usage could be likened to the manual car in my story.  The clutch is the brain.  Most times,  people say things not properly thought out.  That means,  they didn't engage the brain sufficiently before the mouth was opened. Remember,  it is not what goes into you that defiles but what comes out of the mouth of a man... Most people hide under the excuse of "slip of the tongue ".

This season,  so many people are self made information chief executives. Some are specialists in copy and my past mails whose source(s) is/are not verified. Service to the mouth,  is usually difficult. So,  I appeal that we be fast to hear but slow to speak. The reason for this appeal amongst other things,  is that we may be able to see each other after this phase & relate freely with one another. Don't let your mouth put a barrier in perpetuity between you and your once cherished friends and family. Unuane...

Pay attention to the manual car driving style as you instruct your kids at home,  as you talk to your spouse, put phone calls across to loved ones,  send SMS to someone,  post anything on your whatApp page,  & others. Words can work for someone & they can also work against someone.  Matters arising : Mind what you say,  to whom,  where,  when & how it is said. Please know the difference.

In the event that you missed the "clutching pattern",  learn to use the magic words for a discipline & enlightened mind, that is ready to drive safely,   I AM SORRY & THANK YOU.
Good evening folks.
