By Our Correspondent in Uyo
The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Akwa Ibom State Chapter, has received an approval from the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Independent National Electoral Commission to be part of the body observing the forthcoming general elections in the state.
The decision for Christian Association of Nigeria to be part of the observing body in the 2019 general elections is to ensure that the right procedure is taken to parties’ to elect the right persons into any political offices.
The decision was disclosed by the state Chairman, Rev. Ndueso Ekwere earlier today in Uyo at a seminar organized by CAN to lecture Christians and Church leaders on how to become election observers.
Rev. Ekwere said CAN would not display any apathy in Nigerian politics, as this is the worst administration where Christians have been slaughtered, experienced forceful seizure and grazing of farmland by the herdsmen, women abused by the herdsmen among other vices.
“Christians have suffered a lot in this administration,. Therefore, God forbids that we vote for any person who is sectional. We will not vote those who do not condone other religions; who don’t have integrity, proven records and most importantly, we cannot just let herdsmen graze on our land and in turn rape our women, massacre our men on their own farmland.”
“Remember what happened in Southern Kanduna, Plateau and Benue states. Who knows what will happen when everybody is talking about Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Cross Rivers, Delta and others? Of course, you know they may not go to Rivers, but in Akwa Ibom State, we are busy trying to pull our brother down; we must be careful with our votes,” Ekwere said.
The CAN Chairman revealed that observers will be deployed to all the wards in the state to observe the activities done in each polling centre and charged the intended observers never to be partisan while observing, but to consider the future of the country first.
He furthered charged them that, while observing, they should be law- abiding citizens and they should not receive any unnecessary gifts, but report every conflict to Christian Association of Nigeria. He added that stated observers should not get involved in counting of votes, not developing personal interest while observing, not involving in the announcement process of the result, not giving out unnecessary information to the media and should not undertake any risk, but work with their eyes and head.
Projecting the characters of Nigerian leaders in 2019 elections , Ekwere said the people need politicians with proven integrity, and record of achievements in their fields of services, emphasizing that educated persons with minimum constitutional requirements, with good plans for country that will help to fast- track development of Nigeria will emerge.
Rev. Ekwere described CAN as a superior voice in the country that can influence the decision in the political sector by contributing to who roles the country, especially those who are not tribalistic in governance.
Various lectures were given to the people on the roles of observers and code of conducts during elections.
