CISLAC, NOA sensitize youths on corruption

By Akpomejero Friday, Benin

Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), said Nigeria can only move forward when youths who are often regarded as future leaders purged themselves of all manners of corrupt practices, see and report same to the authorities saddled with the responsibility for proper sanctioning rather than doing nothing.

Advocacy and Legal Officer, CISLAC, Bathsheba Tagwai made the assertion on a one-day sensitization in tertiary institutions held in Benin City.

She said the fight against corruption must be seen as one for all and not for a selected individual in the society  adding that in achieving a corrupt free society, the youths must be educated on the adverse effects of corruption in the country.

"This is a sensitization targeted at the young people especially youths in the tertiary institutions and the NYSC. So the main aim of this sensitization is to educate, enlighten and engage the youths in the fight against corruption.

"We want to be able to educate them on their rights and responsibilities because if they are not aware of their rights they will not know when they are being tempered with.

"We want to actively encourage them to participate in shunning and fighting corruption in their schools and in the society at large.

Speaking on the topic: "Your Rights and Responsibilities as a Nigerian", the Ag. Edo State Director, National Orientation Agency, Mrs. Eseka Grace said the act of corruption ranges from mere mutilation of the country's currency and high disrespect of the nation's flag.

The Ag. State Director represented by his deputy director, Mr. Austin Odile said the youths must be involved in the democratic process of the country be collecting their voters card to enable them choose their leaders in the forthcoming election rather criticizing the government as a nation gets the kind of a leader it deserves.

Also, Mr. Jimoh Sulaiman of the ICPC enumerated some of the consequence of corruption as bad roads, unemployment and poor delivery of other essential services.
