By Isaac Eranga

In a bid to promoting youth participation in the electoral process of Nigeria, the Youth Initiative for Advocacy, Growth and Advancement (YIAGA) held a town hall meeting at the Egor Local Government Council secretariat in Benin, with the team, Promoting Inclusive Governance for Development.

In his opening remark, the Edo coordinator of YIAGA, Amb. Peter Aguebor said he was delighted to see youth stakeholders seated for a just course. He said though it is not compulsory for all to be politicians, it is their civic right to promote good governance through inclusion. Amb. Aguebor reiterated that solutions to the problems besieging Nigeria is in the hands of the youths.

"Chief Anthony Enahoro was in his youthful age when he made history by moving a motion for for Nigeria's political independence. A not of us are not happy with the state of affairs in this nation but are scared to take action. Today's meeting is towards redefining our purpose", he said.

Speaking, the Chairman of Egor Local Government Council, Hon. Eghe Ogbemudia, who was represented by the Vice Chairman, Hon. Uyi Amegor, said the town hall meeting was timely, saying conscientious the youths on the importance of  it will help in creating employment and reduce social vices in the polity. She also said the meeting will help reverse the opinion of many youths that there is no way one can live a good life in Nigeria.

Also speaking, a former Speaker in Edo State House of Assembly, Chief Hon. Elizabeth Ativie who was represented by Mr. Nathaniel Otaigbe  advised youths to embrace politics, she said in the past when politics constitute 40% youths and 60% others, it was very interesting. She said the motive for joining was to see what they can offer to the state or nation.

Mrs. Ativie who was a former National President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria said the reason why youths are being discouraged from active participation in politics include: lack of faith in themselves and low self esteem, lack of mentorship, lack of trust, lack of awareness and the  discomforts of older people having youths in their midst. She said when the above factors are reversed, youths inclusiveness would be achieved.

Also speaking, another law maker in the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Roland Asoro said the programme was timely considering the clamour for youths participation in governance and the not too young to run bill passed by the National Assembly. He reiterated that the factors affecting youth inclusion in governance include: poverty, barrier to standard education, monetisation of the political system, etc. He called on youths to always make themselves available, saying they form the nucleus in which fundamental development goals are made.
