When wisdom plays peek-a-boo

By John Mayaki

Yesterday, what should ordinarily have been a regular video received more recognition than it deserved on twitter. This was because gossip.naij.com , a website that prides itself in vending and soft-wittedly disseminating gossip, rumour and indelicately amative stories, published an untruthful story headlined thus, “See the 10 G-Wagons that allegedly belongs to the governor of Edo state, Godwin Obaseki (photos, video)”.

The video was initially posted by the All Progressives Congress handle of London and was purportedly shot by a self-styled whistle blower insinuating that a fleet of 10 G-Wagon jeeps belongs to the governor of Edo State, Mr Governor Godwin Obaseki.

A thorough critique of this defaming and libellous publication will swiftly send the gossiping website responsible for publishing it to go the way of all flesh. It is not only a travesty of the otherwise noble whistle blowing policy of the Buhari-led administration which has yielded fruits, but as well a reflection of the shallow-mindedness occasioned by assumptive thinking.

The caption of the video by APC London read, “[WHISTLE BLOWER] Video received in our inbox! For sale? Proceeds of CORRUPTION? @officialEFCC please investigate! W/B policy WORKING.”

It made no allusion or reference to Governor Obaseki.
It is said that in an attempt to give a lie an appearance of truth, common sense is usually the first casualty.

In peddling the rumour, the enterprise of fallacy revealed a great dearth of intelligence in the quality of its writers as exemplified by one Adunni Amodeni, the name behind the story. This Adunni, based on comments below the video, wrote the story on the gossip site alleging that the cars in the video may belong to Governor Obaseki.
At least one of the cars actually bearing a custom plate number, ‘OBASEKI’, occasioned the comment itself. So, according to the rumour-mongering website and the commentators, there is only one Obaseki in the world, and this Obaseki is the governor of Edo State.

No more will be said on this issue, but overall, this is an unintelligent attempt to deceive the public. It is a simulation suitable for Nollywood productions where this “whistle blower” should have directed his talents.
